Girls Like Sandwiches Too

Sandwiches for the Season

December 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

All self-respecting sandwich fans with $20 (that does not include yours truly, at the moment) should probably go see this play!

THEATER: Featuring a four-piece orchestra with original score, the eclectic and humorous theater troupe Banana Bag & Bodice is celebrating its 10th anniversary with A Very Sandwich Christmas. The show’s a festive reworking of their alt-theater hit Sandwich, and is described as a “playful, provocative, horrific musical that examines the art of eating and the blind act of consumption during the festive holiday season.” Always innovative, relentlessly imaginative, and sometimes frustrating, Banana Bag & Bodice has definitely helped make the theater an exciting place to visit, and they promise this one will “make you laugh while forcing you to smell the burning flesh surrounding your merry little soul.”

Brie, Je t’aime!

November 23, 2009 · 1 Comment

Perhaps it was the fond memories of some crazy Frenchies we met on Friday night on the M15…but when stopping at my bodega for a cheesy snack while slightly intoxicated and feeling very content with the memories of a really fun weekend…I knew what I needed was France’s king of cheese…le brie!

It’s not always about sandwiches…

November 11, 2009 · 1 Comment

Girls DO like sandwiches. And most of them like the choice to make their own legal reproductive choices, without the government butting in and severly hindering any healthcare reform because of the bitter fights about abortion. In a country with an alleged separation between church and state, I fail to understand how religious people think they can force their morality on others and severely restrict access to a LEGAL procedure. Rich people will likely always be able to get abortions, whether its from a connected doctor who secretly provides them to wealthy clients, or whether they fly to France, where things like this aren’t an issue. It’s the poor people who must pay out of their own pockets to either make a choice to abort this fetus or to spend even more money they don’t have raising it. In an homage to the ever popular facebook group “Against gay marriage? Then don’t get one” I would like to say:

Against abortion? Then don’t get one (and stfu)

And here, the op-ed that inspired me to reiterate the feelings of anger, and says the above much more intelligently: The Ban on Abortion Coverage

Simple Pleasures

November 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

This past weekend, I was suffering from the most wicked case of acid reflux my poor esophagus has ever known, Shortly, after recovering from a stomach virus, I experienced constant nausea for an entire week. The only benefit of this awful ailment was that I was losing weight from never eating much, but it was so miserable. I would dream about what food I would get when I was healthy (now that i AM healthy I know I’m going to go to Sorriso Pork Store). Anyhow, this was my outlook as far as feeding myself went. Vietnamese BLT (or, the one where I lose my banh mi virginity)

November 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Last week, on an unseasonably cold Friday night, I headed out to meet Michelle for a very exciting experience…my first banh mi. If I am going to continue to call myself a sandwich blogger, I know it’s crucial that I expand my sandwich tasting horizons, especially for a somewhat “trendy” sandwich. Because I like to do a lot of research, I clearly read more articles than necessary about the banh mi so I would be adequately prepared for the experience. If you are like me, and you like a little background with your sandwich, read this enlightening article from the Times about the banh mi craze in NYC.  In my research, it became clear that there were a wide variety of banh mi, but it seemed that some of the most traditional ones included some ingredients that made me a little squeamish, such as pate and like anchovies (or something). I was frightened, but dedicated to soldiering on. After all, it was clear they knew what they were doing when created this popular sandwich. Keep reading →

A Taste of Cuba

October 29, 2009 · 2 Comments

Last week, mother nature smiled upon us and after unseasonable coldness, we were graced with an October week where the temperatures rose into the 70s and the sun was shining all day. Winter is one of my most nefarious foes and so I felt compelled to take advantage of what will likely be the last warm week until maybe April. While there are many drawbacks to unemployment, notably being broke all the time, spending hours writing thoughtful cover letters, and generally feeling like an unproductive member of society – there are also perks, like being able to spend a gorgeous Wednesday outside. To add to the festive atmosphere, unemployment buddy Annelice scored a full-time job and we needed to make the most of her last week of playtime.

More details on our day of fun after the jump… Keep reading →

Les chateuses bebes aime les sandwiches!

Les chanteuses bebes aime les sandwiches!

by Amy

Bonjour! C’est moi, one of your trusty sandwich reviewers reporting
from the south of France. While on vaca, I had a bunch of delicious
sandwiches – although most consisted of regular ingredients you can
have at your friendly neighborhood deli in the US, they were far
superior to American sandwiches simply because of the bread.
Seriously, America? You need to get on the baguette bandwagon. So much
better than a sesame roll.

But anyway, I digress. So one day it was quite cold and rainy,
unseasonable weather for the region, and I had spent most of the
morning wandering around the Palais des Papes in Avignon with my
fiancé and future in-laws. We were all cold, tired, hungry, and more
than a little cranky after learning about popes all morning.  There
was only one cure for our lunchtime blues: croque madames!  I’ve had
croque-monsieur before, but this has the added bonus of a fried egg on
top.  Basically it is a hot ham and cheese (gruyère) sandwich, coated
in a Béchamel sauce, with a fried egg on top.  Not approved by Weight
Watchers but helpful in awkward situations when you have run out of
things to say in French to your fiancé’s family (just eat it and say
“c’est très bon!” while rubbing your belly).

Although this is basic pub fare in France and not at all fancy, it
totally hit the spot and revived us for some more sightseeing.

Ooh la la, le sandwich!

A Humble, Yet Delicious Sandwich: A pictorial

September 2, 2009 · 1 Comment

I’ve mentioned this sandwich before – as the “Forgotten sandwich” I made one night while extremely intoxicated but I enjoy this sandwich just as much when I am sober and craving some yummy sandwich goodness that won’t break the calorie bank or require me to do any dishes. Here’s my winning recipe for a simple, yet fulfilling and delicious sandwich:

I begin with the Boca brand spicy “chicken” patties…. while I am by no means a vegetarian, I am a big fan of Boca products because of their relative healthfulness and ease of preparation, plus I never have to deal with the grossness of touching raw meats.

After I microwave this sucker for 1 minute, I top with a slice of delicious cheddar cheese

cheddar%20cheese

I have been known to experiment with the cheese/sauce/bread combinations here, but cheddar is always a winner and something that I usually have in the house, so this is probably one of my most-eaten combinations.

Then I slather on some buffalo sauce, because I think everything is better with buffalo sauce

Disclaimer: I have never used this Jesse James brand, but the ghetto brand I buy does not have a picture on the Interwebs

After that I top with my favorite – Claussen Dill pickle sandwich slices – the ONLY pickles I ever buy:

the best pickles my money can buy

These provide some much needed crunch and tangy-ness, and finally I put the whole thing on these Arnold Flatbreads
100 calories of awesome!

and voila! an easy, yet tasty meal that is surprisingly filling, although sometimes I do wish for a side dish! Enjoy making this one at home, kids.

$5 Footlong

August 31, 2009 · 3 Comments

Here’s a little (freestyle) poem I wrote about the Subway in the Coney Island SUBWAY station (meta!) :

SUBWAY IN A SUBWAY

When you have no choices

you get a 6 inch turkey on wheat

then upgrade to foot long for just a dollar more

provolone

lettuce & tomato

onion & pickle

honey mustard

add a diet coke so you can pour beer in the cup later

and some baked doritos for later, on the subway

it’s still a sandwich.
